An air source pump is a different way to keep a building warm, and could be the perfect solution to generate heat yourself and perhaps make some savings on your company fuel bills.

How do they work?

An air source heat pump for heating and cooling is typically installed outdoors, at the rear or side of a building. It draws warmth from the air and increases its temperature through the use of a heat pump. This pump runs on electricity, but is relatively energy efficient.

Air source heat pumps often qualify for payment through the Renewable Heat Incentive. This is a government scheme that encourages people to generate their own heat through a financial incentive.

Air source heat pump types

Air-to-air

This type of pump draws warmth from the air outdoors and releases it into your building with a fan system. Hot water can’t be produced through this type of heat pump.

Air-to-water

This type of pump draws the heat from the air outside and feeds it into a water-based central heating system. The heat it produces is lower in temperature than that of a traditional boiler, so you might need to install underfloor heating or larger radiators to get the most out of it.

Expenses and savings with an air source heat pump

An ASHP is cheaper than a ground source heat pump. Estimates from the EST (Energy Savings Trust) estimate the price of a typical ASHP system installation ranges from £7,000 to £11,000.

Depending on the efficiency of your system, the time taken to recoup that initial investment varies. It also depends whether you qualify to receive money with the RHI, and what your pump’s heat is used for.

If installing an ASHP to replace your old heating system, the EST estimates average savings for a small building, like an office, would be as follows:

  • Replacing gas – £455-£485
  • Replacing electric – £735 – £820
  • Replacing oil – £290 – £315
  • Replacing LPG – £1,000 – £1,090

The EST also estimates that payments from the RHI would come in at £1,140 – £1,235 per year. Bear in mind that replacing a new A-rated heating system with an ASHP could actually make your bills increase.

Air Con was something I have been considering for a few years, 2026 made the decision for me. I thought it would be expensive, complicated and messy! I was wrong. I-HT visited, did a survey, explained the solution and then quoted. I was impressed with the team. The quote was competitive and the installation clean, professional and drama free. Highly recommended

Great experience all the way from the first phone to the final instillation (even after 5 heat waves and a world wide stock shortage totally getting in the way). Office kept me up to date and didn't get annoyed (I'm assuming) at my questions during the UK wide stock shortage (see heat wave). The guys that come and fitted the equipment all on time very polite and always up for answering a question or 5!.. Everything explained and demonstrated brilliantly. Couldn't be happier with the service provided.

It's always good to go on a recommendation and we did so from friends who had used I-HT. We have no hesitation in passing that recommendation on - really pleased, first class!

Great service from everyone at I-HT. From the initial enquiry, quote and installation, everything was brilliant. The installers and electricians did a great job on the hottest day of the year, which included crawling around in our loft which must have been 40c ! They left everything very tidy. We are now enjoying cool air in the long hot summer. Thanks again.

After thoroughly explaining how it would look both inside and outside the installation was very neatly done with no damage to the decor. We were shown how to use the remote and helped to download the app and shown how to control the unit remotely. We couldn’t be happier with the service

Really wish I’d had air con installed years ago. Finally went for it after a recommendation from my electrician. Lee came out really quick to do the survey even when in a heatwave. I was offered an installation date quicker than I thought as I was going for a single unit. I was pleasantly surprised with the price too. Michael was a top installer. Can’t believe how tidy he left it. Was cleaner than when he arrived 🙌 genuinely kind and diligent with his work. Was such a good experience he’s coming back in August to fit an upstairs one. Can’t get a better compliment than that. 10/10 I-HT and the office team. Thanks ☺️ very much

I had I-HT install an air conditioning system at home, the guys who came round were great, very punctual and completed the install in around 4 hours and left the place clean and tidy. Installation was extremely neat and professional, and would recommend them over any other. You may find cheaper quotes, but you do not want to cheap out when it comes to a quality job and on going customer service. On that note, they were not expensive - just a fair price for outstanding work and customer service.
